Spirit In Motion Teams
Thank you to all who attended our Spirit In Motion auditions for the upcoming Winter/Spring Season! We had a blast, and we hope you did too! The season will last from November to April. Auditions will be held for the next season in May 2025, so if you missed out, mark your calendar early!
There are two teams to join as a member of Spirit In Motion. Our Performance Team welcomes dancers of all levels who are looking to improve their dancing/performance ability, and who love working in a team environment. Our Competition Team is for experienced dancers who are comfortable learning choreography quickly and are highly driven to improve.
BOTH our teams attend competitions and performances throughout Northern California.
If you have any questions which aren’t answered below, email us at info@spiritinmotiondance.com!
I’m a brand new dancer. Can I really join SIM with my experience?
ABSOLUTELY! Remember, all seasoned dancers were once beginners! With SIM, we’ll teach you how to dance, and tell you the secret skills needed to put on a killer performance. We have multiple routines so dancers of all levels have a place where they’ll feel comfortable!
What should I wear to auditions?
Wear clothes that are easy to move in, such as a t-shirt and athletic or yoga pants. Please wear your suede-soled dance shoes, if you have them. If not, a pair of socks will do just fine!
Do I need a partner?
No! You do not need a partner to audition. You will partner up with the other auditionees.
Do I need to prepare choreography?
No! We will teach you all the choreography. However, we want you to present the choreography to the best of your ability with your best technique.
Do I need to know how to dance?
For our Performance Team – no! We welcome new dancers and will teach you how to dance. However, it will be VERY beneficial if you are taking ballroom dance classes as well during the season – the more classes you take, the more you’ll understand what we’re asking you to do during rehearsals. We love Spotlight and highly recommend their classes, but any ballroom studio is a great option! Check out Spotlight Ballroom’s class schedule for the right level class for you!
Our Competition Team requires the ability to lead or follow bronze-level syllabus figures with a high level of technique. Our routines feature silver-level dance figures and technique in smooth and rhythm.
When do you meet for practices?
Performance Team – Mondays, 8-10pm
Competition Team – Thursdays, 8-10pm
What opportunities will I have to perform?
Spirit in Motion performs annually in the Spotlight Ballroom showcases held throughout the year. Other opportunities, such as community events and competitions, come up during the year when our members are available to perform, such as UC Davis Picnic Day and the California State Fair. Competing in the International Grand Ball in July is a yearly tradition!
Are there monthly fees or dues?
Yes, but if the membership dues are a financial hardship, please speak with our directors! All required expenses are explained in our team contract, which you are able to review before agreeing to join the team.
