Happy Friday everyone! Each week we’ll be putting the spotlight on one of our own so you can get to know our team! Today’s featured member is: Emily!
**When did you join SIM and how many years have you been on team?
-I auditioned and joined in October 2017, so this is my second year!
**What has been your favorite SIM routine to perform? Which is your favorite routine to watch?
-I’ve only been in one piece so the Michael Jackson Club is my favorite so far! I love watching the Competition Team perform. All their hard work really shows – they are so fun to watch! Very inspiring!
**Tell us about when you first started dancing.
-My mom has told me that I was dancing before I could walk! I started taking classes at our local Rec Center when I was about 5 years old and was completely hooked. I started with Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Hip-Hop, doing dance recitals every year for about 10 years. I would practice all over the place, whenever I could. It was through these classes I learned about expression, confidence, maturity, patience, and how to be the best version of myself.
**What is a fun fact we don’t know about you?
-I’m a duel-citizen! My wonderful mother is from Ireland (she has an accent apparently). I was baptized in Dublin as a baby and gained citizenship there about 3 years ago with my brothers!
**What is your favorite dance and why?
-My favorite dance is definitely the Cha-Cha-Cha! I love the Latin beat and how the body and footwork move to it. It’s a super fun dance that allows me to feel alive and confident!
**What is your most favorite thing about being on SIM?
-The people on team, hands down. I had just moved to Sac and discovered the studio through Groupon. I found a flyer for the team, auditioned and honestly my life has not been the same! The people I have met over the last year have become my family. I was so nervous to be in this city all on my own, but they have been great friends, supportive, hard-working, and encouraging. I am grateful for this incredible group of people 🙂
**What has been a challenge for you as a dancer?
-I would say that learned partner dancing has been challenging. I have been trained to dance since I was little, but now I have to do it with a human in front of me and not back-lead or step on their toes!
**How has being on SIM changed your dancing?
-It’s completely transformed my dancing! I learn something new every day, with practices, performances, and social dancing.
**What is the most important thing you’ve learned as a dancer?
-I’ve learned that it’s okay not to look perfect. It’s what you feel inside and the work you out in is what counts! Dance like nobody’s watching!
